Cooling Load vs Flow

How Energy is wasted:

Billions of dollars are wasted annually by US building owners due to limitations in their hydronic heating and cooling systems. The waste occurs when heating or cooling coils do not consistently operate at their designed temperature drop -which in turn wastes energy. The vast majority of this loss could be eliminated by retrofitting the existing valves that control the water flow rate to the heating and cooling coils with a new valve technology pioneered and produced by Flow Control Industries. Even more energy loss and capital expenditures could be eliminated if this technology was designed into new construction.

To achieve optimal results, heating and cooling coils must operate in window of both temperature difference between their inlet and the outlet "delta T" and in a window of desired flow rate. To make up for lack of optimal delta T more water must flow through the coil to make up for the inefficiency and wasted energy resulting in additional wasted energy moving the excess water.

If additional boilers or chillers are not turned on to keep up with the increased water flow rate, they will operate at less delta T than they were designed for. To design around this inefficiency more or larger chillers or boilers need to be specified for new construction and/or added to existing construction to fix the problem.
